At the recent MTV Movie & TV Awards, the cable channel announced that it is coming to Siesta Key for an unscripted television series about a group of friends who return to their hometown after their first year away at college. The announcement came as a shock, said Sarasota County President Virginia Haley, who had heard talk of such a project in the rumor mill for years, but never thought anything would ever come of it.
This is good news, right? Not according to those who call Siesta Key home. A flurry of tweets the night of the announcement expressed the grave concerns of residents. They accused MTV of potentially “ruining their beach” once/if the new show takes off. MTV has stated that the series will be relaxed and not provocative or offensive like some other beach reality shows that have enjoyed popularity and success in the past.
As of yet, MTV has have not directly responded to the local residents’ backlash. The television show, simply titled “Siesta Key,” is set to premiere July 19th on MTV. Tune in to catch the action taking place right here on our own powdery, sandy piece of paradise.
