Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

Reading aloud to children is fundamental; not only does it help develop language skills, it encourages them to be imaginative and expands their understanding of the world. For young girls, growing up in a world where they are often belittled and left behind, stories of empowerment are most important. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is a collection of bedtime stories that provides just that.

Created by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo, the book’s goal is to reverse and dismantle the gender stereotypes that are present in classic children’s literature. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls features 100 stories celebrating historically important female figures such as Frida Kahlo, Cleopatra and Serena Williams. Each story is accompanied by a full-page portrait of these incredible women illustrated by female artists from around the world.

Favilli and Cavallo encourage that these “modern fairy tales” be read to young boys as well, so they can develop interest in and empathy for female protagonists. Empowering women is only one step; gender equality truly begins with creating a universal understanding among all genders, starting with our children.
