When it comes to vitamins, many wonder if they should be taking a gender-specific variety as opposed to the generic kind meant for everyone. It turns out, the health industry isn’t trying to fool you into spending more money; you really do need a specific one for your gender!
Vitamins aren’t all the same, and it’s important that you choose one catered toward your gender, age group and stage of life. For example, if you are pregnant, you want to focus on calcium, folic acid, vitamin D and so forth. If you’re a woman in your 40s, you should aim for B12, magnesium, potassium and probiotics. Our bodies change as we get older, so our needs change as well.
But if you aren’t addressing a certain issue, or suffering from any serious medical problems, vitamins won’t actually do that much for you. In fact, it’s more important to be food smart and prepare meals that contain the correct amounts of nutrients. As long as you are achieving a healthy balanced diet, you can ditch the daily pill organizer.
If you still feel the need to supplement your regular intake of nutrients, at least make sure to choose a vitamin in your age and sex group. Ask your doctor for a recommendation that is right for you.
