As the weather gets a little cooler, here’s a few healthy tips to keep pesky cold symptoms at bay. Skip the pharmaceuticals this winter and head for the essential oils.
STOP HEAD PAIN
Peppermint oil can soothe a headache as effectively as 1,000 mg of acetaminophen report scientists in the journal Phytomedicine. Henning Stolze, Ph.D., co-author of the study says the peppermint’s oil calms pain nerves, relaxes spasming muscles and stimulates blood flow to the scalp. You can get relief in just 15 minutes by mixing 6 drops of the oil with 1 oz. of unscented lotion, then firmly massage on our neck, forehead and temples.
AVOID A COLD
Over a dozen studies have shown the active ingredients of oregano essential oil (carvacrol and thymol) to be potent antiviral agents to reduce the risk of colds and other viral infections for as many as 85 percent of people. To stay healthy, mix 3 drops of oregano essential oil into 4 oz. of water or juice and drink once a week. If you are already sick, studies show this remedy taken each day will help you bounce back quicker- often in just 48 hours.
SOOTH A SORE THROAT
During cold and flu season, your risk of developing a sore throat doubles. To help relieve the symptoms in as little as 10 minutes inhale cypress oil, a potent anti-inflammatory. Pour 2 cups of hot water into a pot. Add 3 drops of cypress oil, lean over the pot, drape a towel over your head and inhale in steam for 10 minutes.
