The age of Lucille Ball seems to be making a hilarious comeback. Women have always known how to tickle our funny bones, but lately it seems that the line-up of the hottest, most popular comedians are primarily female.
The new Ghostbusters movie is topping the box office with its fabulous (albeit controversial) all-female cast. Controversial because some of the original film’s die-hard fans don’t like the ladies messing with a so-called “classic.” But Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are the brightest comedic stars out there right now, and the remake was one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer.
And then there’s Amy Schumer, who is also enjoying amazing success on both the small and big screens these days. With her dry wit and over-the-top delivery, she is sailing uncharted waters when it comes to making us laugh by telling it like it is.
Consider, too, Maya Rudolph, whose new variety show with Martin Short, Maya & Marty, is a slightly milder version of Saturday Night Live, but with the same quirky sense of humor. It harkens back to the days of The Carol Burnett Show with its silly sketches featuring a standard cast joined by an ever-changing troop of special guests.
It’s good to know that the ladies are back in action when it comes to giving us a giggle.
