Forget “beauty sleep”–more like brainy sleep.
A new study out of Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Center in England shows that women require more sleep than men.
The reason is simple: they use more of their brains.
According to professor Jim Horne, “Women’s brains are wired differently … so their sleep need will be slightly greater.” Horne goes on to say, “Women tend to multi-task, they do lots at once and are flexible, and so they use more of their actual brain than men do.”
The study, which followed 200 sleepers, found that women require about 20 extra minutes of sleep per night than their male counterparts. It is reccomended that everybody get an absolute minimum of six hours of sleep each night.
Horne spoke of how insufficient sleep has clear effects on women.“For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression and anger,” he said. “In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”
